When the Essers constructed the Duneland Beach Inn in Michigan City, Indiana over 85 years ago, they probably never imagined what the building would be like today…
Originally built as a comfortable Lake Michigan inn for road-weary travelers and city dwellers looking for a peaceful getaway, Duneland Beach Inn today is proud to offer even more accoutrements - and is far more than just a Michigan City bed and breakfast!
The Duneland Beach Inn was built in 1924 by the Essers, a German couple who relocated to America and Michigan City to build a better life. At the time of construction, the inn was a small hotel, boasting 20 rooms and just one shared bathroom.
Elsie Esser was known as an uncommonly good cook, and word of the table she set soon spread into the city. As her talents became more widely known, the Essers’ Lake Michigan inn became a summer vacation spot for people leaving the busy Chicago lifestyle in search of more tranquil surroundings.
While the number of guest rooms has dropped in our Michigan City inn from 20 to just eight, the building has lost none of its original charm! In fact, the Duneland Beach Inn is still known for outstanding food 85 years later!
Nestled in a quiet private neighborhood, this Lake Michigan inn is located in a wooded residential area, just a five-minute walk to a private lakefront.

Our newly renovated guest lounge is complete with TV, fireplace and unrestricted access to coffee, tea, and ice. The lounge is the perfect place to enjoy an evening cocktail while unwinding for the day. The Inn also boasts wireless Internet throughout.

Please keep in mind that we are a Michigan City inn, and are not designed as a full-service hotel. The Duneland Beach Inn in Michigan City, Indiana is not staffed overnight and is completely non-smoking. We welcome children over the age of ten to accompany their parent or guardian. The inn does not allow pets inside.
We allow our guests to enjoy the privacy of their stay by keeping staff interference to a minimum. All rooms are tidied daily during breakfast hours, unless otherwise instructed by a guest.
